The results are in from the Sommelier Wine Awards 2020, and we're thrilled to have scooped more than 200 medals for our wines! Judged by a panel of leading sommeliers and on-trade drinks buyers, these awards highlight the best wines available to restaurants, bars and hotels in the UK.
A combination of new and trusted wines, which our buyers have worked tirelessly to find, our portfolio picked up 35 golds and 213 medals overall. Fifty producers are represented, from across the globe and at every price point. This haul is a brilliant endorsement of our producers and shows our commitment to delivering exceptional wines to the trade.
Simon Jerrome, our Head of Wine Procurement, says, "Matthew Clark and our producers continue to support these excellent awards. The SWA is run by the on-trade, for the on-trade, which is where our heart belongs. We are particularly pleased to see in an increase in our overall medal tally this year, with many golds going to our new agencies and firsts within Matthew Clark portfolio."
To pick just a few highlights, we're thrilled to see the Luis Felipe Edwards Macerao Orange Moscatel win gold! This rich and textured wine from Chile's cool-climate Itata Valley is the first Orange wine we've listed. Our pair of Rita Rosé and Rita Blanc Cans from Santa Rita picked up commendations. These are the first wine in cans to be entered into the Sommelier wine awards and receive a medal.
Elsewhere, we're proud to see Franciacorta La Capinera Brut, Vigneti Cenci win a gold medal. From a tiny, family-run estate where the owner does 99% of the work himself! Owner, winemaker, administrator and delivery driver Maurizo produces amazing wine, and this gold medal confirms that.
Mas de la Rosa Vi de Finca, Vall Llach was also at the top of the class. This stunning red is the flagship wine of our new Priorat producer, a tiny winery based in the village of Porrera. Finally, we're delighted to see the beautiful Nebbiolo Langhe Picotener take gold; made from a nearly extinct clone of Nebbiolo rediscovered by the team at Enrico Serafino.
